FIRST DAY OF CAMP!!

DRAMA CLUB

Today was so much fun!! Everyone was ready to jump right in and play. It usually takes a couple of days to warm up into things. We are brave and strong and talented!

Today, we worked with Miss Deb, Miss Amy, and Jess at Drama Club. Students had already made tie-dyed shirts with Miss Paula and Miss Carol and there would be even more to do AFTER Drama Club too!

We all introduced ourselves. We let each other know what our interests were and what we loved to do. We also automatically worked together as a team. We did a name dance.

After that, we talked about observation and journaling. And then we each got two different journals. A large one for our desktop work and a small one for on-the-road observations. We learned that theatre is really about experience, and experiencing. And so we journaled about what it would be like to experience our most awesome amusement park ride.  After that, we played a fun game of Sherlock inside. Sherlock is a lot about working together which is a major theme of Drama Camp. Soon after that came lunch.

After lunch, we all met outside. There were two parachute areas and four tents and a little swimming pool. The large parachute was towards the back of the property in the shade. But, we didn't count on the bugs. On the big parachute, we played a name/statue game and we learned how to play Zip, Zap, Zop. Zip Zap Zop is a game about impulse and connection, and it involves a lot of eye contact. We even worked on an advanced version that adds the "bowl of jello" option. Which I can safely say, we all LOVED!

After this, we made our way over to the shaded tent/shallow pool area. But we were all a little itchy and so we put our toes in the very shallow pool of water and we all had a cold cold popsicle. Except for a couple of us with food allergies because we have to be very careful.

In the shaded pool area, while eating popsicles, we began to talk about the three basic parts of storytelling: beginning, middle, and end. We talked about how character and setting are established in the beginning. The fun part is always the middle where conflict happens. We all knew right away that the end was for resolution.  We then went back inside because it was hot and buggy outside.

Tomorrow there will be an outdoor fan in place to keep the bugs away and some pretreated areas that will be sprayed in the morning. Many of us really want to run through sprinklers and have a second pool tomorrow. That way we can have a bouncy pool and a still water pool. Bathing suits may be in order.

Once back inside we learned yet ANOTHER new game. Freeze Tag. I know what you're thinking, but this is a different kind of Freeze Tag. It's another improvisation game. It was more fun than we anticipated and everyone participated and cheered each other on.

Even though we all kind of wanted to keep playing Freeze Tag for the rest of the day, we switched gears again. We went into a Building A Story exercise. We were in two break-out groups and we had five minutes each to develop the beginning, middle, and end of our story. Then, we only had five minutes to rehearse. After that, we performed for one another and practiced not only being performers but being a good audience. Because the most important part of theatre is the audience!

That's when the drama portion of the program was over. And then we still had time to hang out and do more fun things at the awesome House of Bernadette!

Tomorrow we are going to learn about Viola Spolin, the MOTHER of improvisation, her friends called her Spark. We'll talk about some more rules of improv and understand more about its history and how valuable it is. Then we'll have a journal assignment for a few moments and we'll even have a word find.

The afternoon will be filled with more games and scene building!

We'll learn ANOTHER new game called, "Alien, Tiger, Cow". This should be hilaaaarious!!
And we'll revisit the favorites from today including, Zip Zap Zop and more Building A Story time. We'll pretty much end every Drama Club building a different story and we'll get really good at it. There are so many ways to grow but working together remains the main objective for Drama Club.

Here's a sneak peek at the word find. It's really optional and will be handed out during journaling time. It seems like a fun way to explore new words. You can even play it on your phone!
